Hong Kong book launch: Tiananmen 1989 - Seven Weeks that Shook the World

Thursday, 11 June 2009.

Hear Vincent Kolo of chinaworker.info and LSD legislator 'Long Hair' Leung Kwok-Hung on Saturday 13 June at Hong Kong Reader bookstore in Mongkok

Thursday June 4 was a landmark event in the recent history of Hong Kong and China. 200,000 people, many not born at the time of the brutal '6/4' 1989 massacre took part in the biggest ever candle-lit vigil to show the Chinese dictatorship and its apologists in Hong Kong's government that no amount of economic 'progress' will excuse or redeem them for the crushing of the Democracy Movement of 20 years ago.

In the wake of this vigil, Hong Kong has been changed. A new more radical mood exists, and is a marked resurgence of interest in mainland China politicis, workers' struggles and the fight for democratic rights in China. Hong Kong youth increasingly understand that the stalled battle for democratic rights in Hong Kong cannot be separated from the struggle against authoritarian rule in mainland China. These issues, and the crucial role of the working class as the main force to change society - in 1989 and today - are the theme of the 13 June official launch of chinaworker.info's new book 'Tiananmen 1989 - Seven Weeks that Shook the World'.
The launch date has been delayed by the hectic June 4 calender of events (the book has been on sale in Hong Kong book shops since 22 May), but this meeting in English and Cantonese, with one of the authors Vincent Kolo of chinaworker.info, and a guest appearance by 'Long Hair' Leung Kwok-hung, will be an opportunity to discuss the way ahead for workers' struggles and the fight for democracy, in the new situation.

Date: Saturday 13 June
Time: 6pm
Place: HK Reader, 7/F, 66-68 Sai Yeung Choi Street South, Mongkok (MTR Station: Mongkok, exit E2)
